FHA COVID-19 Update - July 28, 2021

Florida Hospital Association Provides COVID-19 Update

TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Florida Hospital Association, the state’s leading voice for hospitals and health systems, released data today from an informal survey about COVID-19 hospitalizations. This data compares current COVID-19 hospitalizations in a region compared to its previous peak of COVID-19 hospitalizations. The average regional number only includes hospitals that responded. Statewide numbers are provided by the CDC.

Statewide COVID-19 Update (as of 7/28/2021):
  • Current Hospitalizations              8,816
  • Previous Peak (7/23/2020)         10,179
  • Percent of Previous Peak            87%

COVID-19 Hospital Update:
  • Hospitals report more than 95% of hospitalized COVID-19 patients are not fully vaccinated
  • Average age of individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 is younger than previous peaks
  • No hospitals report serious shortages of supplies
  • Hospitals are implementing surge capacity plans as local situations warrant

“The virus has a new target: the unvaccinated and younger people,” said Mary C. Mayhew, President and CEO, Florida Hospital Association. “Previously healthy people from their teens to their 40s are now finding themselves in the hospital and on a ventilator. Regardless of your age, get vaccinated, if eligible! What you heard last year and last spring about this virus mostly targeting seniors and those with pre-existing conditions is not true today.”

The Florida Hospital Association will continue communicating with all Florida hospitals and state officials and provide additional updates as events warrant.
